FAO to distribute seeds and tools to 150,000 households in South Sudan

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Emergency and Rehabilitation Unit Officer, Joseph Okidi, said that the organization is planning to distribute seeds and tools to about one hundred and fifty thousand household in Southern Sudan. Okidi said that the beneficiaries will include returnees, internally displaced and venerable people in the community. However, he said the organization is expecting six million US dollars from the donors to implement this project.

Government of Eastern Equatoria State launches postal services in Torit

The Government of Eastern Equatoria State has launched postal services in Torit on Tuesday. The office will provide services like saving money, business transaction across Southern Sudan, and produce revenue to the State government in the area. The Director General for the State Ministry of Information and communication, Alex Locor, said that the government will take responsibility of educating its citizens on the importance of the post office service.

93% of Icelanders: No compensation for collapse of Icesave bank

Voters in Iceland have been celebrating, after overwhelmingly rejecting proposals to pay the UK and the Netherlands in the wake of collapse of the Icesave bank. With a third of results counted, 93% of voters said "No" in a referendum. The British and Dutch governments want reimbursement for the $5.2 billion dollars they paid out in compensation to customers in 2008.

Japan donates US $ 40 million for development in Africa including Sudan

The Government of Japan has contributed 40 million dollars to the UN and international organizations to implement the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development. Japan pledges to support peace in Sudan through humanitarian assistance. This contribution comes from Japan's supplementary budget and is expected to respond to the UN and Partners 2010 Work Plan for Sudan.

Japan's Toyota Corp. plans construction of Sudan-Kenya oil pipeline

The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) confirmed receiving a proposal from the Japanese Toyota Tshusho Corporation to construct a 1,400 kilometer oil pipeline from Juba to Lamu port on the Kenyan coast. The Acting Minister of Energy and Mining in GoSS, John Luk, said that the petroleum issue falls under the joint responsibility of the Governments of Southern Sudan and National Unity.
