UNFPA and UNICEF: Little progress in reducing female genital mutilation

E-mail Print

sudanesewomen_38010 to 140 million women are still subjected to female genital mutilation in countries like Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Yemen and Guinea.  The statement by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was issued in observance of International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation.

Both the UNFPA and UNICEF say little progress has been made in curbing the practice as communal and familial traditions continue to dictate the practice.

The International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation falls on February 6th.
