Mission : To make a sustainable contribution to democracy and good governance in Sudan by providing quality, impartial, independent news and information to national, regional and international audiences in Arabic and English. |
Values :
Excellence and professionalism are at the center of Miraya’s work. We strive for an output that is concrete, useful and credible; our activities aim to be well managed and of the highest quality.
Independence from political and economic pressure is crucial for us. Independence alone can guarantee the impartiality of our journalistic activities and ensure our credibility with the populations. No one, except those mandated by Miraya, can request to broadcast or not to broadcast a programme.
Integrity is essential for us. As journalists we report facts as accurately as possible, taking into account our biases, prejudices, life experiences and personal perspectives. Our interaction with third parties, host countries, or authorities, donors and partners is characterized by professional integrity. We favour candour over skillfulness in our contracts or commitments.
Distinctiveness represents a number of values to which we subscribe: respect for cultural differences, idiosyncrasies and tolerance. Miraya does not offer its staff prospects for material profit. Our action also falls within the scope of a profound belief in the universality of human values – as such we assert our humanist identity and our dedication to the universality of rights, defined as human rights. For us respect for the dignity of individuals, harmed by wars or violence is an individual’s most treasured possessions.
An open approach to the world forms an integral part of our identity. Our editorial teams are made up of journalists of different ethnic groups and religious beliefs. This multi-ethnic mix helps build an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Who we are:
Miraya is a 24 hour, 7 day a week radio operated by the United Nations Mission in Sudan in partnership with Fondation Hirondelle, a Swiss non-governmental organization. Programmes are broadcast on 14 FM relays (South Sudan only) from Juba, regional capital of Southern Sudan and from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum in classical and simple Arabic, English and local languages. Miraya also has a daily Short Wave broadcasts accessible throughout the region. Our website, www.mirayafm.org, provides live audio streaming, news bulletin scripts and other selected programmes. Launched on June 30, 2006, Miraya has grown to an organization of more than 100 national staff members (journalists, presenters, technicians and support staff) who have been recruited from all over Sudan and trained in-house. Reporters are sent throughout the country. The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established in March 2005 by the United Nations Security Council. Its mandate, inter alia, is to assist the parties of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in promoting understanding of the peace process. Fondation Hirondelle builds and supports quality media in crisis zones and post-conflict situations. It strives to build media that are trustworthy, relevant, enjoyable and, above all, credible. Most of Fondation Hirondelle projects focus on creating independent radio stations offering news and information on a nation-wide basis. Funding to Fondation Hirondelle for the Miraya media currently comes from Germany, Switzerland and Sweden |
